One late evening on an Australian beach, a young lady was taking a stroll. It was getting dark. Suddenly she became aware of someone ahead of her, picking something off the sandy shore, and throwing it out into the sea. Out of curiosity she gathered speed to come closer. She found out that the old man was picking starfish, which had been washed ashore due to low tide. She knew they would soon die.
She was however amused and asked the person, “There are thousands of starfish on this beach alone, and there may be thousands of such beaches in the world. What difference can your effort make?”
The old man bent down to continue. As he straightened himself up and threw into the sea the starfish in his hand, he slowly but well meaningly said, “But it does make a difference to this one.”
